What is an ingrown hair?

Ingrown hairs are hairs that have curled around and grown back into your skin instead of rising up from it, and dead skin cells can clog the hair follicle. This can irritate the skin and

cause the characteristic red bump, or cluster of bumps, which are often sore, itchy and sometimes painful.

Anyone can get an ingrown hair, but it is often more common in people with curly hair, or hair that has been distorted by plucking, epilating or other methods of hair removal. In men it is most common on the beard area, while in women they often occur on the bikini line or legs.
